📖 Read: School magazine: “Speak up!” — an interview with Aziz أقرأ

Our reporter, Meriem, talked to Aziz, 14, about a difficult time in his life.

👧
MeriemAziz, I believe you had a hard year. What happened?
👦
AzizWe used to live in Tataouine, but last year we had to move to Bizerte for my father’s job. On my first day, some boys laughed at my southern accent.
👧
MeriemDid it stop?
👦
AzizNo. They taunted me every day. When I walked along the corridor or across the yard, they copied my words. I got mad, but I didn’t fight. I stopped participating in class.
👧
MeriemWhat did you do?
👦
AzizMy sister said, ‘You must tell an adult.’ So I went to the counsellor’s office, next to the library. She talked to the boys and their parents. Now everybody has to respect the school charter — it’s on a big poster over the board.
👧
MeriemHow do you feel now?
👦
AzizMuch better! One of those boys is my friend now. He even asks me to teach him words from the south.
👧
MeriemWhat’s your message to our readers?
👦
AzizIf someone hurts you, you don’t have to stay silent. And if you see bullying, you must say something.

Dear Yasmine,

I know you are a little afraid of your new school, so here is some advice. At our school, everybody has to respect the others: you mustn’t make fun of anyone’s accent, name or clothes. You have to be on time, and you must listen when someone is speaking. If somebody taunts you, you don’t have to stay silent. Walk along the main corridor: the counsellor’s office is next to the library, under the big clock. She is very kind and she will help you. Last year a boy had to apologise to my friend, and now they get on well. Don’t worry — you will love it here!

Best wishes,
Rania
